Jean-Claude Barbier, a sociologist, is a Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), member of the unit CES (Centre d’économie de la Sorbonne – Sorbonne Economics) at Paris 1 University, Panthéon-Sorbonne. His research interests include comparing systems of social protection in Europe and the United States, as well as theoretical and epistemological issues of cross-national comparison. After an initial training in management, he studied languages and sociology. His first book was a monograph on work organization. He has also worked on South Africa’s transition to democracy. In 2008, he published La Longue Marche vers l’Europe sociale (The Long March Towards a Social Europe), Paris, PUF, Collection “Le Lien social”, currently being translated in English. With Bruno Théret, he published Le système français de protection sociale in 2009 at La Découverte (Paris), which was translated in Japanese, for the first edition.
