Thomas Mareite



Thomas Mareite is a PhD candidate at Leiden University (The Netherlands) and Research Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies at Middelburg (The Netherlands).

His research focuses on US and Latin American history in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with an emphasis on slavery, resistance and abolition. His PhD dissertation, Conditional Freedom: Free Soil and Fugitive Slaves from the US South to Mexico’s Northeast, 1803-1861, studied the experiences of enslaved people from the US South who sought refuge in the northeast of Mexico between the Louisiana Purchase and the outbreak of the US Civil War. His work has been published in Slavery & Abolition, Esclavages & Post-Esclavages - Slaveries & Post-Slaveries, and the Journal of Global Slavery.
