Global France
An interview with Laurent Dubois

by Ivan Jablonka & Silyane Larcher , 8 October 2010

In his previous research, Laurent Dubois showed how the Caribbean revolutions implemented the ideals of 1789. He now calls for rethinking the history of France thanks to the incorporation of its extra-territorial dimensions : slavery, the Caribbean, the Altantic, the colonial empire and immigration.

Why did you call your seminar « Global France »?

Is it possible to distinguish between the history of the French Republic and that of slavery ?

What kind of modernity did the Caribbean revolutions invent ?

What is the “French Atlantic” ?

Does your book Soccer Empire focus on France’s social and ethnic boundaries ?

Why do the notion of integration and discriminations get along so well ?
