With China’s regained power on the world stage, making accessible and studying the way intellectuals reflect on their country and contribute to the global conversation has become indispensable.

David Ownby is Professor of Chinese History at the Université de Montréal. He has worked on the history of secret societies (Brotherhoods and Secret Societies in Early and Mid-Qing China), contemporary popular religion (Falungong and the Future of China), and is currently working on intellectual life in today’s China (Rethinking China’s Rise, www.readingthechinadream.com).
